Is what I have heard true?

I was reading this book I had laying around, and it said that a horse's chestnuts (the scab like things on the insides of their legs) have a calming scent to another horse. Is this true? I have also heard that one horse, if it smells another horse's chestnut, will usually have a flehmen reaction. I'm just not sure what to believe.
